A Spotify Canvas maker creates the visual file. An eligible artist or team member then adds it to a song through Spotify for Artists.
You can edit your own footage, animate artwork you have permission to use, or try a generator. The finished Canvas appears in the mobile Now Playing view in place of album artwork.

Key Takeaways
Make the file first. A Canvas maker or generator does not replace the upload step in Spotify for Artists.
For a moving Canvas, prepare a 3–8-second MP4 in a vertical 9:16 ratio, 720–1080 pixels tall. Spotify also accepts a JPG.
Check the track and your role. Canvas upload requires the specified main-artist eligibility and an Admin or Editor role.
Keep a copy of your export, check your asset permissions and inspect the result on a listener’s mobile app before sharing the song.
Use Canvas views to check whether the visual was seen, not as proof that it caused more streams or saves.
Choose how to make your Canvas

You do not need a dedicated Spotify Canvas maker. Choose a route that gives you a clear image at phone size and a file you can revise later.
Original footage: Trim and crop a shot you filmed. You control the subject and loop, but should check permission from anyone recognisable in it. Animated artwork: Move or layer elements from artwork you are authorised to adapt. Keep the focal point away from edges that may be cropped on a phone.
A generator: Use a tool to assemble a clip if you want a quicker starting point. Check its asset terms, export options and price before committing.
Spotify for Artists is free to join. A separate maker, licensed footage or designer may cost money, so budget for the visual independently of the Spotify upload.
To compare more creation approaches before editing, see Musosoup’s Spotify Canvas generator guide. Whichever tool you choose, keep the export for upload and later revisions.
Make a file that fits
Set your project to a vertical 9:16 frame with a height of 720–1080 pixels. Spotify accepts an MP4 or JPG; a moving Canvas must last 3–8 seconds. These Canvas file requirements do not require one exact pixel pair. Frame the main subject with room at the edges, and avoid intense flashes or rapid cuts.
Check how the clip restarts. A continuous loop can hide the join; an intentional hard cut can make it part of the design. A rebound plays the movement forward and then backwards. Spotify describes these three approaches. Play the export repeatedly at phone size before uploading it.
Try it: passing streetlights
Choose a shot you have permission to use: streetlights passing a window, for example. Pick footage with one recognisable focal point rather than several small details.
Crop it to 9:16 around the lights, leaving space at both sides. Trim a six-second passage with steady movement. Six seconds is an example, not a preferred Spotify setting.
Make the movement repeat continuously, or try a forward-and-reverse rebound. Export an MP4 within Spotify’s specified height range.
Replay the export several times on a phone. Look for a cropped light, an abrupt jump at the join or a distracting flash. If the join jolts, move the cut to a steadier moment or try the rebound; then export and check again.
Add it to the right track
First, find the song in Spotify for Artists. It must have been delivered to Spotify; delivered upcoming music can appear there before release and can have a Canvas added. If an expected track is missing, ask your distributor to check its delivery and association with the correct artist profile.
No artist-team access yet? Request a Spotify for Artists claim, ask an existing team Admin for an invitation, or use a supported distributor access route. For a first release, your distributor or label may provide an artist link for an early access request. Musosoup’s Spotify for Artists guide covers broader account setup.
Check upload eligibility: You need an Admin or Editor role and must be either the first main artist on the track, or a main artist on both the track and the release. A collaborator credit alone does not qualify. On the web: Open Music in Spotify for Artists, select the track and click Add Canvas. In the Spotify for Artists mobile app, open Music, select the track and tap Edit Canvas.

Canvas upload does not deliver the audio release. If you have not sent the song to Spotify, start with Musosoup’s guide to putting music on Spotify, then return to the visual once the track appears in your artist account.
Check the listener experience and your rights
Canvas replaces album artwork in the song’s mobile Now Playing view; it is not a full music video, a separate stream or an advert placement. When a track is shared from Spotify to Instagram Stories, its Canvas may appear with the track details and a link back to Spotify. Share the song if the visual strengthens its identity, but do not assume the visual will appear for every listener or produce extra reach.
Clear the material before uploading. Check footage, artwork, identifiable people and third-party elements. Spotify’s Canvas terms require the rights to post the visual and associate it with the selected track, and permit Spotify to use it in connection with that content, including social media cards. Permission to upload a Canvas does not, by itself, establish permission to reuse someone else’s assets in a separate advert.
Put the invitation in the post, not the Canvas: If you share a song to announce a show, write the ticket information in your separate social post. Spotify’s Canvas content policy says to avoid ticket vendors, external URLs, social-follow prompts, unrelated promotions and distracting text inside the Canvas.
If the Canvas will not upload or appear
Track or control missing? Confirm the distributor delivered the song to the correct artist profile. Then check your team role and whether you meet Spotify’s Canvas upload requirements.
File rejected? Check the exported file’s duration, 9:16 ratio, height and MP4 or JPG format rather than relying on project settings. Spotify also suggests trying its mobile app and contacting support if the upload error continues.
Uploaded but not visible to a listener? Check the mobile app, turn Data Saver off and Canvas on, and check whether the listener is in a supported location. Spotify lists these listener-side checks.
Measure what happened, then revise
A Canvas view means someone opened Now Playing and saw the visual. Spotify counts no more than one view per stream, regardless of listening duration; views can exceed counted streams because a song must play for 30 seconds to count as a stream. A view is neither a unique viewer nor evidence that Canvas caused a play. See Spotify’s Canvas view-count rules for the counting distinction.
In practice: Note when you add the Canvas. Review any Canvas views shown in your artist account alongside the song’s streams, listeners and saves, without assuming a comparison between different Canvas versions is available. Compare periods with similar promotion where possible, and record any release announcement or other activity that changed at the same time. If your phone check reveals a weak focal point or rough join, make a clearer revision; do not treat a before-and-after change in song statistics as proof the Canvas produced it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a Spotify Canvas creator do?
It prepares the visual asset, rather than granting access to a track. If you already edit video or animate artwork in another tool, check that it exports a file meeting the Canvas requirements before paying for a dedicated creator.
Does a Spotify Canvas generator publish the visual for me?
Check the tool’s export options rather than assuming it publishes to your track. You still need a suitable file and access to the track-level Canvas control in Spotify for Artists.
Can I download an uploaded Spotify Canvas?
A route for downloading an uploaded Canvas as a reusable source file is not established here. Save your original project and exported MP4 or JPG outside Spotify; if you have lost them, ask the tool or collaborator that made the file for a copy. Do not assume a Spotify offline download supplies the visual file, or that another artist’s Canvas is yours to reuse.
What are the Spotify Canvas dimensions?
Use a vertical 9:16 ratio and a height between 720 and 1080 pixels. Spotify specifies a range, not one mandatory width-by-height pair; it accepts MP4 or JPG, with moving visuals lasting 3–8 seconds. Musosoup’s Canvas length guide goes further into timing and specifications.
Conclusion
Confirm the track and your access, choose one cleared visual, then make and phone-check a compliant export. Add it in Spotify for Artists, check the listener view and keep the source file for your next revision.
