It’s autumn! But still warm. Sigh. As the days get shorter and darker however, here’s a solid bunch of new releases from the past month which you can add to your latest pile of Musosoup-endorsed discoveries.
We start in France, where singer-songwriter Clara Quilichini released two excellent singles in September, the latter of which I’ve featured here. ‘Off’ is a stunning track, articulating the difficulties found in both the realities of modern life and the public reactions (or lack thereof) to the global atrocities which continue to this day.
Over here in the UK, Bristol-based artist Lexus P kicked off the month with the launch of his 6-track EP ‘Lex Education’, featuring his excellent single ‘Crazy’, which he put out in May. The EP itself is a great mix of lo-fi hip-hop beats and stripped-back R&B influences. There are several great songs to choose from, but I’ve chosen ‘RETREAT’, featuring Asher Simmons, to set the tone nicely for the record.
Leeds duo Mega Happy were another band making a hotly-anticipated return in recent weeks, with a song taking influence from ‘Dubliners’ by James Joyce. From what I can gather, ‘Eveline’ is their first new material in just under five years - it’s been worth the wait!
Back in July, we found Risco on scintillating form with ‘The Night Has Gone’. Now they’ve come back with an (arguably) even better slab of surfy post-punk in the shape of the ‘Come In For A Ride’. A proper banger.
I enjoyed discovering the synth-driven glitch-pop of SERAh recently. New release ‘Going Nowhere’ is an addictive fusion of different electronic textures and flourishes, making a big impact as a result. A perfect dancefloor anthem as the nights draw in…
THERA put out an amazing slice of pop noir back in February called ‘do you see?’ and has now jumped back onto our collective radar with her latest pop smash ‘heartless romance’, which feels like an instant radio hit. Get it in your playlists!
In the north east of England, we find NEEB. The Hartlepool-based quartet always bring a wonderful mix of jazz and soul to the table, with latest single ‘You Are Not Alone’ providing a superb taster for their upcoming LP, coming out in early October.
On a similarly soulful tip, New York collective Hazel Gaze also unleashed an amazing live record a few weeks back, called ‘Strung Out’, recorded at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Dive into the blues-soaked glory of ‘Black Soul River’ now!
Continuing our journey through NYC, there’s a superb artist by the name of Andie Case, whose track ‘Speak of the Devil’ really piqued my interest when I first heard it on the Musosoup site last week. A talented vocalist and an excellent storyteller, Case’s EP ‘Show me yours, I’ll show you mine’ is available now on all streaming services.
Finally, The Now! These guys have been mainstays of my Amazing Radio show in recent years, and their second album ‘Moments In Motion’ is right around the corner (coming out 30th Oct). Get your ears around the anthemic ‘Did You Miss Me?’ in the meantime.
