Where did that month go?! Amid this unusually warm autumn, here are ten musical discoveries which have been ‘on the stereo’ throughout October.

Let’s get things started with the lo-fi soul-soaked brilliance of Colorado outfit Third Ward. ‘Alleluia’ came out right at the start of October, displaying some beautifully-crafted funk undertones, perfectly paced and wrapped up with all manner of glorious rhythms.

Next we have Edinburgh songwriter Ewan Patrick! The wonderfully-named track ‘I Could Agree With You But Then We’d Both Be Wrong’ taps into the kind of catchy indie rock which might appeal to fans of Biffy Clyro and Foo Fighters’ more melodic work. A wonderful return.

It’s also great to welcome back Brighton-based artist Sabrina G to this column with her latest pop banger. ‘Hierarchy’ builds strongly, with a fine concoction of pitch-perfect vocals and classic R&B textures.

I was thrilled to discover the work of Casey Austin Allen a couple of weeks back - he describes his stunning new record ‘View Of A Lifetime’ as a song “inspired by Appalachia, for Appalachia”, with all proceeds from the release going to charities dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Staying across the pond for a minute, let’s dive into the world of Canine Wedding. ‘Just Like Home’ is a lovely slab of fuzzed-up indie pop, cementing their reputation further, following the summer release of previous single, ‘Racetrack’.

Over in Berlin, Swedish songwriter The Saga is making a very special brand of experimental folk pop. Their beautiful self-titled single ‘The Saga’ takes its inspiration from Greek mythology, and is part of a new EP called ‘Pluviophilic Poetry’, set for release in November.

Norfolk-based artist Mazz was another one to make a great impression over this past month with the excellent ‘So Scandalous’, a track taking sonic influences from Afrobeats, hip-hop and his upbringing in Portugal.

Over in Buffalo, New York, we encounter The Dignitaries. The duo, comprising Illy Ali and Anthymonthetrack, have cooked up a timeless piece of classic-leaning hip-hop in the shape of ‘Let’s Talk’.

It’s fair to say that It’s fair to say that Anna Josephine has had a truly prolific year, with latest release ‘Safe and Sound’ her fifth single to be unleashed in 2024. It’s an incredibly personal piece of work, channelling melodic dream-folk and country pop to superb effect.

Finishing this month’s round-up, we have veterans of this column, The Trusted. The Essex collective put out a brilliant track called ‘The Lightning’ a few weeks back. It’s a proper earworm - a genuinely bouncy slab of anthemic indie pop. Get on board!
